What is EMV?
All major credit card companies have collaborated via EMV, which stands for Europay, MasterCard®, and Visa® (the three companies that initiated this effort). EMV is a global standard for authenticating credit and debit card transactions for integrated circuit cards – "chip cards" – at POS (point-of-sale) terminals.
Chip cards are standard plastic credit or debit cards embedded with a microchip which protects in-store payments by generating a unique, one-time code needed for each transaction’s approval. A chip card also has a magnetic stripe on the back of the card and may also include contactless payment technology. Most U.S. banks are currently in the process of re-issuing all cards to include a chip. |
 |
Why does this matter to our dealership?
EMV standards were implemented in 2015 by all major credit card companies for point-of-sale transactions in the United States. Fraud liability now falls on the party least compliant with EMV standards – and as fraud continues to migrate to the weakest technology (magnetic stripe), dealerships that aren’t EMV-compliant will be exposed to the most risk.
With chip cards and contactless payment options, the ways customers can pay are changing, and accepting these new payment types will help your dealership continue to deliver kick-ass customer service!
Have there been any changes to TALONes?
Yes. To support EMV compliance, HDDS has updated the Cash-Out screen in TALONes. This has affect all TALONes dealerships – regardless of whether you use integrated credit/debit card authorization via EPP. For more information, view the HDDS-TV appropriate to your dealership in the TRAINING section below.
What should we do next?
For non-EPP dealers, who process credit and debit card authorizations separately from TALONes, please contact your payment processor for information on how EMV affects you.
For dealers using EPP (Electronic Payment Processing, the integrated credit/debit card solution within TALONes), your payment processor has to be EMV-certified with Shift4 in order for you to accept chip cards from your customers; however, you should proceed with PIN pad purchasing and installation so that your dealership will be ready for EMV chip cards as soon as your payment processor is certified.
How do we get new PIN pads?
HDDS has certified two specific PIN
pad models as compatible with TALONes/EPP, both from Verifone – the MX
915 and MX 925. HDDS has identified JR’s P.O.S. Depot (www.PINpads4EPP.com) as a preferred vendor. JR's is offering H-D dealers a bundled, turn-key solution for purchasing PIN pads that are correctly configured for use with TALONes/EPP.
 |
Each bundle from JR's comes with:
- Signature-capture PIN Pad
- Power supply and cord
- Ethernet cable 15'
- MX-Y cable, Ethernet w/power pigtail
- Stylus pen
- TALONes-specific file load
- PIN encryption key injection for secure Debit transactions

Where in the PIN pad ordering process is your dealership?
- Our dealership has not pre-ordered or ordered PIN pads.
- To be EMV-compliant as a TALONes/EPP dealer, you must order HDDS-specified PIN pads (such as those available from JR’s POS Depot).
- Your next steps, as detailed below in the ORDERING section, include evaluating how many PIN pads you need, ordering them, contacting Shift4, and preparing your physical environment and your staff for the new PIN pads.
- Our dealership did place a pre-order – but we have not yet paid JR’s POS Depot.
- Then your next step is to log onto JR’s POS Depot to pay for your order.
- Please also refer to the ORDERING section below, in particular the portions about Shift4 and preparing your dealership environment.
- Our dealership did place an order or a pre-order – and we have paid JR’s POS Depot.
- If we haven’t already, HDDS will be reaching out to you (on a first-paid, first-served basis) to schedule a date for assisting your dealership with your PIN pad installation.
- You should address the items outlined in the ORDERING section below, if you haven’t already.
ORDERING
1. Confirm how many EMV-compliant PIN pads you need, considering these factors:
- Each TALONes workstation where you want to accept EMV-compliant chip-card payments will need its own PIN pad.
- Purchasing stands for your new PIN pads is optional. Without a stand, a PIN pad will rest flat on the counter.
2. Order your PIN pads from JR’s P.O.S. Depot (www.PINpads4EPP.com) (or pay now for your pre-order).
- Complete your order at your earliest convenience to ensure stock availability.
- When asked on the ordering page to enter the Debit Key Injection:
- If you do not know the key designation for your debit processor, look on any previously-used PIN pads for a sticker with the ID on it. If not found, list the name of your processor or merchant service provider is in the space available; look on your monthly merchant statement for this information. You may also contact JR's P.O.S. Depot at 888-247-6532 for assistance with their ordering site.
- Once JR’s reports to us that payment for
your order was received, a HDDS representative will reach out to you (on
a first-paid, first-served basis) to schedule a date for assisting your
dealership with your PIN pad installation.
- NOTE: HDFS can provide financing for your purchase of PIN pads via their Working Capital program.
3. Contact Shift4 to begin your transition to EMV.
- First contact Shift4’s Account Maintenance team at [email protected] or 702-597-2480, option 4 to start your EMV request. That team will send you an EMV account addendum for you to sign and return to them.
You will then be contacted by the Shift4 Account Setup team regarding your account and your new PIN pad devices. (PIN pads ordered from JR’s P.O.S. Depot will be injected with the Shift4 P3PE P2PE key and with your payment processor’s Debit key.)
The Shift4 Implementation team will review your information and forward it to their Quality teams for verification. They will work with you, as needed, until all information is up-to-date and confirmed.
After those steps, Shift4 will schedule your EMV transition with you. Please make sure that you will have your EMV-compliant PIN pads installed before that transition occurs, so that Shift4 can test your successful transition to EMV. Completing the process with Shift4 prior to installing your new PIN Pads may result in your dealership being charged, unnecessarily, for EMV capability prior to your dealerships ability to process an EMV transaction.
You should also be aware of this Shift4 announcement:
To enable EMV processing, and based on your configuration, a processor change fee, a per-terminal registration fee, and EMV processing and setup fees will be required. You will see that we have kept our pricing at a minimum.
Please contact our Account Maintenance team at [email protected] to get your specific pricing agreement for implementing EMV.
(Note that HDDS will not be charging any additional fees related to EMV functionality for TALONes/EPP dealers.)
4. Prepare your dealership's physical environment for your new PIN pads:
- Power Outlets: A PIN pad requires power to operate, so an open electrical outlet is necessary. A surge protector is recommended, as with all electronic equipment, but any outlet will do. (The PIN pad comes with an AC power adapter with a cable approximately 6 feet long.)
- Network Connections: A PIN pad communicates over your internal network; therefore, a network connection, or drop, will be required. Many counter locations have a limited number of network drops but many devices that require network connections (e.g., a PC or thin client, a receipt printer, and the PIN pad). A small 5- or 8-port switch can be installed to accommodate multiple device connections, for example, the NETGEAR ProSafe 5-port switch, which can be purchased at www.mcpconnect.com, the HDDS purchasing portal.
- Counter Space: Space can be a challenge at some counter locations. If you’re replacing a device, then there is probably enough space to accommodate the new MX 900 Series PIN pad. However, if the device is new to a counter location, there might be some challenges rearranging the counter space to allow for enough room for customers to insert or swipe their cards. The size specifications for each device are listed below:
- MX 915: Height: 2.2 inches / Width: 7.2 inches / Depth: 8.9 inches
- MX 925: Height: 2.2 inches / Width: 8.6 inches / Depth: 9.1 inches
5. Prepare dealership staff by reviewing these changes:
- TALONes Cash-Out screen:
- Anyone who cashiers transactions in TALONes should view the videos in the Training section below
- PIN pad customer prompts:
- Insert chip-card and leave in reader until prompted to remove
6. Receive your shipment and install your first new PIN pad with assistance available as needed from HDDS Technical Support.
- Your PIN pad shipment will arrive before your ability to process EMV transactions is enabled. (Specific timing is still to be determined.)
- After your first successful PIN pad installation, you should be able to install your remaining devices; however, HDDS will remain available to support you.
7. Begin using your new EMV-compliant PIN pads with TALONes/EPP!
How can I find more information?
HDDS-TV's (Training Videos):
- There were changes in the TALONes EMV update that affected the Cash-Out screen. Cashiers should watch the video that applies to their dealership to learn what's new:
- Marketing staff at the dealership may be excited to know that VeriFone MX925 and MX915 PIN pads allow you to customize the idle screen (between transactions) with your own images. Watch this TV to learn more!
KNOWLEDGE BASE ARTICLES:
SUGGESTIONS:
- If credit/debit is the most frequent payment method that your customers use, to facilitate the enhanced cashiering workflow, we recommend that your default payment method for the Cash-Out screen is set to “Credit/Debit.” Someone with administrative access should go to the TALONes Administration module, select File | Preferences | General Dealership Control, and change the “Default Payment Method” to “Credit/Debit.”
- Print copies of the "EMV Top Five" things cashiers should know about changes to Cash-Out in this TALONes update, and post one at each cash register:
- If your PIN pads have been installed but are not yet ready for chip-card transactions, print these signs on business-card stock from your local office supply store. Insert a sign into each card reader to direct your customers to swipe instead of inserting their card. (You may need to tape them in place, so they stay in the card slot.)

Are we required to get new PIN pads?
To be EMV-compliant, TALONes/EPP dealers will need to purchase HDDS-specified PIN pads that can accept chip cards. These devices also offer additional protection for your customers and your dealership through P2PE (point-to-point encryption). P2PE solutions encrypt cardholder data at the point of interaction with a card.
What are the ramifications if our dealership is not EMV-compliant?
Previously, if an in-store transaction was conducted using a counterfeit, stolen, or otherwise compromised card, losses from that transaction typically fell back on the payment processor or card issuer, depending on the card's terms and conditions.
As of the October 1, 2015 deadline created by MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express, the liability for fraud shifted to whichever party in a fraudulent transaction is the least EMV-compliant.
In the example of a financial institution that issues a chip card used at a merchant that has not changed its system to accept chip technology, a counterfeit card could be used successfully. In that case, the cost of the fraud now will fall back on the merchant.
If our dealership’s fraud rate is low, and we are willing to defer purchasing EMV-compliant PIN pads, will our current PIN pads continue to work with TALONes?
HDDS is not enforcing EMV compliance, and your existing PIN pads continue to be compatible with TALONes, even with the payment industry’s EMV standards in place.
What should our TALONes/EPP dealership do when we want to begin accepting Debit Card payments from our customers?
- First, contact your credit card processor to inform them you want to start accepting PIN-based debit cards, and that you need to know what the Debit Key is to encrypt your PIN pads.
- Then give JR’s POS Depot the Debit Key code when you place your PIN pad order.
- Finally, update your account with Shift4 by contacting them at 702-597-2480, option 2.
Our dealership has been offered free PIN pads by our bank. Will those devices be compatible with TALONes/EPP?
No. Your bank is offering free PIN pads only if you switch to them as your processor. However, your PIN pads can only be integrated with TALONes when configured to work with Shift4 via TALONes/EPP. Without EPP and Shift4, payment authorizations and cash drawer reconciliation at the end of each day become manual operations between two disconnected systems, rather than the simplified and integrated process for TALONes/EPP dealers.
Can we obtain PIN pads elsewhere and have them configured by JR’s POS Depot to work with TALONes/EPP at our dealership?
Yes; however, before proceeding, please contact HDDS Business Development for more information about the costs and other ramifications of that option:
Are the new EMV PIN pads wireless capable?
While the Verifone MX 915 and MX 925 PIN pads technically have wireless capability, HDDS has not yet tested the compatibility of wireless PIN pad functionality with TALONes. Once wireless compatibility has been tested, we will update this FAQ.
Can PIN pad devices be shared by more than one TALONes workstation?
Each TALONes/EPP workstation where you want to accept EMV-compliant chip-card payments will need its own PIN pad.
Can PIN pad devices be shared by more than one retail system?
Your PIN pads cannot be shared between separate systems, for example if your dealership uses another system for rentals.
Can we configure our new PIN pads to display dealer-specific images?
Yes, your dealership will be able to upload up to three images that will rotate on the PIN pad screen when the device is idle.
Will new PIN pad devices be able to accept NFC (contactless) payments?
Yes, you are able to accept payments via Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and other contactless payment methods (via NFC – Near Field Communications) with your new PIN pads connected to TALONes/EPP. Note, however, that Shift4 is still in the process of developing this capability. Contactless payments may not be EMV-compliant via TALONes/EPP until a later date.
How should we dispose of our old PIN pads?
HDDS shares the global concerns over electronic products getting into landfills, causing contamination of ground water, and other environmental issues. Please contact your local municipal waste company for proper disposal instructions. They will help you dispose of these terminals in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Do we still need our MSR's (Magnetic Stripe Readers)?
Your MSR (Magnetic Stripe Reader) devices must be used for gift card activation. Keep in mind, however, that MSR’s are not EMV-compliant, so using them for credit card authorization after EMV is in place may make your dealership liable for fraudulent activity.
Should we consider purchasing any other equipment?
Make sure you have enough power outlets to support the new devices you’ll be adding. If not, you may need to add a power strip or additional outlet at the station.
Also, a PIN pad requires a network connection. Do you have a network drop or switch port available? If not, you may need to purchase a switch or add a network drop.
What about receipt printing? To comply with EMV standards, your customer receipts will need to include all card approvals, declines, and voids for each transaction. To accommodate this, TALONes will print card authorization information on a separate receipt.
To use less paper at your TALONes workstations that print receipts on 8.5 x 11” paper, you may want to consider purchasing a slip printer, which prints on receipt-sized paper. A TALONes console in Service, for example, could be configured to print a work order on 8.5 x 11” paper, while the payment authorization would print on the receipt printer.
Printers can be purchased from MCPconnect. Please contact HDDS Business Development for more information:
